Multiple news services are reporting Congressional Republicans today voted down a Democratic measure that would have opened an investigation into Trump's communications with Russia and compelled himn to turn over documents related to those contacts and potential conflicts of interest. Instead, they opted to ask Attorney General Jeff Sessions to cooperate with any future investigations of Trump's ties to Russia.
AG Sessions, it should be noted, is considered "the godfather" of Trump's most dramatic executive orders -- including the Immigration Ban (Washington Post, 1/30/17). He worked for Trump as an adviser and has been an ongoing mentor of Trump's senior policy adviser, Stephen Miller.
The Post cites Steve Bannon as saying about Sessions, “Throughout the campaign, Sessions has been the fiercest, most dedicated, and most loyal promoter in Congress of Trump’s agenda, and has played a critical role as the clearinghouse for policy and philosophy to undergird the implementation of that agenda. What we are witnessing now is the birth of a new political order, and the more frantic a handful of media elites become, the more powerful that new political order becomes itself.”
Sessions is hardly an impartial arbiter of any investigation into Trump and his Russian Connection, or his financial conflicts of interest, his vengeful barring of media from White House briefings, or his pathological lying and questionable mental health.
It's a bit like Republicans asking Trump's favorite uncle to be the arbitor of justice.
