The Washington Post is reporting Trump is preparing two executive orders that will directly impact the environment. The first will lift a moratorium that prevents the BLM from leasing to land to coal mining companies, allow them access to 570 million acres of public land for mining exploration and operations. It will also rewrite the greenhouse gas emissions by electric companies, removing a contested requirement that they reduce carbon emissions over time. The second will revamp the "Waters of the US" rule that protects more than 70% of the nations waterways from industrial pollution.
The Post notes that while it may take a year or two for these E.O.s to pass legal hurdles and be fully adopted, the signing of them "could affect investment decisions within the utility, mining, agriculture and real estate sectors, as well as activities on the ground.
The Post also noted that the House has already passed legislation that would eliminate a BLM rule curbing the release of greenhouse gas methane from oil and gas operations on federal land. The legislation still needs Senate approval and Trump's signature.
